THE CHURCHILL STATUE

The bronze statue to Sir Winston Churchill is a prominent landmark on Woodford Green, overlooking the top of Salway Hill. It was commissioned from sculptor David McFall and unveiled in 1959 to celebrate the great war-time leader's time as MP for Wanstead and Woodford.

This building in the Woodford Road, South Woodford, was built in the 1750s. Liddle's the Grocers occupied the premises for 200 years. By the 1950s they were able to boast they were the oldest grocers in Essex. In the 1980s much of the building was demolished but the façade was kept. A plaque on the front has the inscription 'Established in the Reign of George II', added at some point in the building's history.

 

The early 18th century 'Manor House' was formerly the West Essex Conservative Association Headquarters; in front of the building stands a bust of Sir Winston Churchill in honour of his time as MP for Wanstead and Woodford. Manor House, originally one of a row of similar buildings called the Mall, is now a main office of the Allied Irish Bank. The rest of the Mall is long gone.

This fine art deco picture house was opened in 1934 by Sir Winston Churchill. Called the Majestic, it had 1,728 seats and the first film shown there was Cecil B. de Mille’s Cleopatra. The cinema reopened as the ABC in 1973 with three screens, and then in 1998 as the Odeon with seven screens. An extremely popular venue for the latest feature films, the South Woodford Odeon is also equipped as a conference centre.

THE OBELISKS

The older of these two obelisks was erected in 1824 to mark the direction of North from the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. In 1884, it was decided that the true line of longitude lay 19 feet east of that obelisk, so a smaller one was placed accordingly – but the older one was left where it was. The writer T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, bought a large part of Pole Hill in 1919 and built a hut close by the obelisks. There he wrote his Seven Pillars of Wisdom, chronicling his experiences during the Arab Revolt of 1916–18.

A 17th century timber-framed dovecote, the only surviving building associated with the manor of Pimp Hall. With room for some 250 birds, the dovecote originally belonged to Pimp Hall (Originally Pympe's Hall), one of Chingford's three manor houses, its barn having blown down in a gale in 1990. The surrounding land is now a nature reserve.

This Esporta Health Club occupies part of the former Claybury Asylum, a substantial complex of Victorian buildings at the top of a hill in the grounds of a fine Georgian house: Claybury Manor. Sir Humphry Repton landscaped the grounds in 1791. The Asylum's chapel is now the Club's 20-metre swimming pool and the main fitness room is the former hall, notable for its magnificently decorated ceiling.

Described when it was built as 'mixed Tudor and Stuart' in style, this building was designed by William Scott and George Moffatt. Snaresbrook Orphan Asylum was founded by Congregationalist Dr Andrew Reed and formally opened in 1843 by Queen Victoria’s uncle, King Leopold of Belgium. It later became the Royal Wanstead School. It is now the largest Crown Court centre in the country.
