Situated right in the centre of Waltham Abbey in historic Sun Street, the Epping Forest District Museum is in a building that dates back to 1520. The Museum holds many artefacts, archaeological items, paintings, photos and a newspaper archive relating to West Essex.

Built in 1952, this is a labyrinth of fascinating underground rooms set deep in a hillside to offer protection in the event of a cold war: Government officers and military commanders would have operated from here in complete secrecy. Set in beautiful woodlands with picnic facilities and an orienteering trail, the Secret Nuclear Bunker is now open to the public and has rooms available for hire.

The ‘Great Standynge’ was built in 1543 – not for Elizabeth I, but for her father Henry VIII. It was a grandstand from which to watch deerhunting, and possibly to aim crossbows from. Later the local manor court was held there. Since 1895 it has been open to the public, having been tearooms and a museum. Now principally a historic attraction, it hosts interesting heritage events throughout the year.

Not a historic building, but full of historic stuff! Redbridge Museum, which opened in 2000 in Ilford Town Centre, explores the many different people, places and events in over 150,000 years of history in what is now the London Borough of Redbridge. Period rooms, a Children's Trail, interactive multimedia and a range of fascinating objects appeal to all ages. There are also a range of temporary exhibitions and family events thoughout the year.

VESTRY HOUSE MUSEUM

Vestry House was built in 1730 as an administrative centre for the community before being extended to become a workhouse. In 1840 the inmates were moved to a larger workhouse in Leyton, and Vestry House was used as an armoury by the local infantry. The building had various other uses until 1930 when the present museum was opened, now housing a wealth of material on the borough of Waltham Forest.

William Morris lived in this building, the Water House, with his mother and siblings after leaving Woodford Hall in 1848. The Gallery was started in 1950 by the artist Sir Frank Brangwyn who had for a time worked with William Morris. It houses an extensive collection of works by Morris and associated artists.
