Built in 1952, this is a labyrinth of fascinating underground rooms set deep in a hillside to offer protection in the event of a cold war: Government officers and military commanders would have operated from here in complete secrecy. Set in beautiful woodlands with picnic facilities and an orienteering trail, the Secret Nuclear Bunker is now open to the public and has rooms available for hire.

The ‘Great Standynge’ was built in 1543 – not for Elizabeth I, but for her father Henry VIII. It was a grandstand from which to watch deerhunting, and possibly to aim crossbows from. Later the local manor court was held there. Since 1895 it has been open to the public, having been tearooms and a museum. Now principally a historic attraction, it hosts interesting heritage events throughout the year.
