BANCROFT'S SCHOOL Founded by the Drapers' Company in 1727, Bancroft's was originally in Mile End. The school moved to Woodford Wells in 1889. Designed in Tudor style by Sir Arthur Blomfield, the rambling red brick buildings comprised a large quadrangle with a handsome four-storey gatehouse. Bancroft's is Woodford's oldest secondary school and became a direct grant establishment in 1919. www.bancrofts.essex.sch.uk |

ELMHURST Elmhurst was built in 1771 for a Silvanus Grove and was originally known as Grove House. After 1818 it was owned by a merchant, Alexander Stewart, who had sugar plantations in Jamaica; when slavery was abolished he was paid significant compensation. Two further families owned the house from 1851 until 1920, when it was bought by Queen Mary College and used mainly for student accommodation. The estate included 16 acres until 1925 when the Southend Road was cut through it. Elmhurst was acquired by the present owners in 2004. |
